Additional advice on import and processing of genetically modified oilseed rape MON88302xMS8xRF3

Advisory reports | 22.05.2017 | CGM/170522-01

In 2014, COGEM published its advice on import and processing of genetically modified (GM) oilseed rape MON88302xMS8xRF3. COGEM concluded that import and processing of DAS-44406-6 poses a negligible risk to the Dutch environment, but expressed concerns regarding the Post-Market Environmental Monitoring (PMEM) plan.
Recently, European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published its overall and scientific opinions on import and processing of GM oilseed rape MON88302xMS8xRF3. The Netherlands Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment asked COGEM whether EFSA sufficiently answered COGEM’s comments on the application for import and processing of GM oilseed rape MON88302xMS8xRF3.
The comments expressed by COGEM have not resulted in changes in the PMEM plan. COGEM therefore remains of the opinion that the PMEM plan needs to be adapted to include general surveillance of feral GM oilseed rape populations along transport routes (roadsides and railway beddings) and transshipment areas, before authorisation can be granted.
