Update on the risk classification of organisms 2024

The Netherlands Commission on Genetic Modification (COGEM) advises the Dutch government (amongst others) on the classification in risk groups (classes) of organisms according to the risk they pose to human health and the environment. These classifications are written in Dutch and are therefore only published on the Dutch part of the COGEM website.

In order to inform other countries and/or organisations about the classification of organisms by COGEM, an overview of the risk classifications is published on the English part of the website. In October 2024, these lists will be updated, in which ‘new’ organisms will be added based on published COGEM advisory reports, and the corresponding COGEM advise will be added. The following lists will be updated:

– Classification of Organisms: Pathogenicity classification of Bacteria
– Overview of containment measures for genetically modified plants
– Classification of Organisms: Pathogenicity classification of DNA and RNA viruses
– Classification of Organisms: Pathogenicity classification of fungi
– Classification of Organisms: Pathogenicity classification of parasites
– Overview of micro-organisms other than viruses, bacteria, fungi or parasites, classified by COGEM

The Risk Classification of viruses will also include a taxonomic update, according to the most recent ICTV Release.
