Update of the taxonomy of the fungal classifications lists of COGEM

The taxonomy of fungi is constantly changing due to new scientific insights and technological advancements. As part of the update of the pathogenicity classification overviews by COGEM, changes in nomenclature and other taxonomic revisions are incorporated as much as possible. During the previous update in 2024, it was determined that the taxonomy of some species on the lists was not up-to-date and contained inconsistencies. Therefore, COGEM commissioned a research project to review the nomenclature of both non-pathogenic and pathogenic fungi and to correct any inconsistencies.

The results of this research are described in the research report ‘Update of the taxonomy of the fungal classification lists of COGEM’. The species names on the fungal lists were checked for taxonomic inconsistencies using various (online) databases, expert consultation, and literature review. Where necessary, proposals for corrections were made, which are discussed in the report. The report also provides guidelines for determining taxonomy, which may contribute to future classifications of fungi by COGEM.

The research report can be found by clicking the ‘Download publication’ button. The findings of the research report form the basis for the periodic update of the COGEM pathogenicity classification overview.
