Update of the pathogenicity classification lists of human and animal pathogenic RNA and DNA viruses 2026

COGEM is regularly consulted on the pathogenicity classification of viruses. COGEM periodically publishes overviews of the human and animal pathogenic DNA and RNA viruses it has classified, to keep them up-to-date and accessible to third parties. This advisory report adds newly classified viruses to the overview and implements revisions to the pathogenicity classifications. The nomenclature has also been reviewed and adjusted where necessary, based on the most recent list (2025) from the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV).
