The English translation of the COGEM report on ‘grey areas’ in the regulation of green and red biotechnology (CGM/2025-01) is now available. The report provides building blocks for more resilient legislation in the field of GMOs.
COGEM is of the opinion that the research report ‘Grey areas in the regulation of green and red biotechnology’ offers valuable input on several points for government policy in the field of biotechnology. The table with an overview of building blocks with advantages and disadvantages in the development of new regulations for specific issues at hand can help to make a more balanced choice for a particular type of regulation.
In response to the report, COGEM notes that regulation of GMOs primarily takes place at EU level, so that new EU regulations should be developed in a resilient manner in order to overcome the problem of regulations constantly lagging behind technological developments. This will ensure that new legislation can better and longer keep pace with future innovations.
