COGEM has its own research budget to support its statutory tasks. These studies, carried out by external experts, are aimed at increasing knowledge about, among other things, the introduction of GMOs into the environment, improving risk analyses, identifying ethical and societal issues surrounding genetic modification, and recognising new scientific developments and trends.
By commissioning research, COGEM can substantiate its advice and recommendations with up-to-date, scientifically based insights. The research results make a direct contribution to the quality of the advice and recommendations – for example, by identifying biotechnological trends at an early stage, collecting data to support identified developments, or strengthening the methodology used by COGEM.
