COGEM provides both solicited and unsolicited advice in advisory letters. Solicited advice is usually given in the context of specific permit applications. Unsolicited advice often concerns broader, more general issues, such as improvements to risk analysis or overarching topics that have emerged in multiple advisory requests.
As COGEM advises the Dutch government, its advice is mainly published in Dutch. Mainly advice concerning market authorisations is written in English. Occasionally, advice is translated to make it more accessible to a wider audience.
Policy reports
Through policy reports, COGEM informs the government about ethical and societal aspects of genetic modification. These policy reports describe the relevant ethical and societal arguments surrounding activities involving GMOs that play a role in decision-making, based on scientific insights and consultation with stakeholders. COGEM does not make judgments or provide recommendations for action in these notifications.
As part of its role in informing the government about developments in the field of biotechnology, COGEM, and the Health Council of the Netherlands, publish the ‘Trend Analysis Biotechnology’.
