Subcommittees
Subdivision into subcommittees
COGEM members are divided among three subcommittees: Ethics and Societal Aspects (ScEMA), Agricultural Aspects (ScL), and Medical and Veterinary Aspects (ScMV). In addition, the ad hoc subcommittee on Contained Use may convene as needed. The subcommittees prepare COGEM’s advice letters and policy reports, which are then submitted to all members for approval. Each subcommittee meets several times a year.
Subcommittee Agricultural Aspects (ScL)
This subcommittee focuses on environmental risk assessment related to the genetic modification of plants, crops, and plant pathogens.
Subcommittee Medical and Veterinary Aspects (ScMV)
This subcommittee assesses the risks to humans and the environment of genetic modification within the medical and veterinary domains. It covers both research activities in laboratories and animal facilities, as well as clinical research activities, such as gene therapy.
Subcommittee Ethics and Societal Aspects (ScEMA)
The ScEMA monitors developments in genetic modification within their societal context. The subcommittee provides balanced insight into the ethical and societal goals and values involved, without expressing judgment.
Subcommittee Contained Use
This subcommittee convenes when a specific issue arises. It consists of relevant experts from the other subcommittees who temporarily participate for the duration of the advisory process.
